UFC officials have confirmed that Gabriel Gonzaga (13-6 MMA, 8-5 UFC) is set to take on the latest Strikeforce heavyweight acquisition, Shane Del Rosario (11-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC).
Gonzaga, who was released from the UFC after his loss to Brendan Schaub at UFC 121 made his UFC return at UFC 142 where we saw him submit Ednaldo Oliveria in the 1st round. Gonzaga strayed away from his high level Jiu Jitsu abilities after he viciously knocked out Mirko Cro Cop with a head kick at UFC 70. After that fight, 4 out of his next 5 losses would be via KO/TKO. Gonzaga went back to his Jiu Jitsu roots in his bout with Oliveria and it proved worth while, getting the submission victory. Gonzaga will look to get two wins in a row and start climbing the UFC Heavyweight ranks once again.
Shane Del Rosario who is making his UFC debut is yet to be beaten. Included in his undefeated record were three straight wins under the Strikeforce banner. Including a 1st round submission victory over Lavar Johnson would recently made a very impressive UFC debut with a KO victory over Joey Beltran. Another interesting point about Rosario is that out of his 11 wins he has a 100% finish rate with 8 coming by TKO/KO and 3 coming by way of submission.
UFC 146 takes place May 26th in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the feature bout of the evening will be the highly anticipated UFC Heavyweight Title showdown between champion, Junior Dos Santos and number one contender, Alistair Overeem.
