UFC 146 is turning into the war of the heavyweights as UFC officials have also announced that former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Cain Velasquez (9-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) will be taking on another former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Frank Mir (16-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC). The winner will become the #1 contender for the UFC Heavyweight Title which will also be determined on the same card.
Mir is coming off of an impressive 1st round submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 in December of 2011. That win gave Mir his 3rd win in a row with his other two coming over Roy Nelson and Mirko Cro Cop. Mir, who won the UFC interim title from Nogueira when they met the 1st time at UFC 92 is on a three fight win streak since losing another contender’s fight against heavy handed, Shane Carwin. Before the Carwin fight, Mir had lost to Lesnar in a title unification match but then went onto defeat Cheick Kongo in impressive fashion. The highly determined Frank Mir will look to make it four in a row and get a shot whomever may be the UFC Heavyweight Champion.
Velasquez, who lost the title in the UFC’s debut on Fox to current champion, Junior Dos Santos in November of last year is on a hunt to once again become the champion. Velasquez, who also had wins over Nogueira, Lesnar and Kongo has won seven straight within the UFC, including his championship victory over Brock Lesnar in October of 2010. An injury sidelined Velasquez to which lead him to a year layoff until meeting with Dos Santos.
UFC 146 takes place May 26th in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the feature bout of the evening will be the highly anticipated UFC Heavyweight Title showdown between champion, Junior Dos Santos and number one contender, Alistair Overeem. The winner of this title fight will meet the new number one contender most likely in late 2012.
