Saturday, April 21st, 2012 came with the anticipation of a great UFC card and what better way to enjoy watching the event than with great friends and the man that holds the record for the fastest knockout in that same promotion. Area 51 Fight Gear (@area51fightgear) organized a great event at Boston Pizza in Aurora, Ontario. The crew invaded the bar area of the restaurant for the event, giving fans the opportunity to meet Duane “Bang” Ludwig (@DUANEBANGCOM)
The Area 51 crew coordinated a list of great things for everyone to enjoy. They setup an area in the corner of the bar where fans got to meet with Bang, get autographs and get to talk to him. The guys were also selling products from their clothing line up, the Bang shirt being the main attraction for the night. The team were also selling off raffle tickets for prizes like autographed UFC gloves, tshirts, and a couple other things. With great product, great company, and the great atmosphere the event kicked off in amazing fashion.
I couldn’t have thought of any greater places to hold the event, as Boston Pizza’s bar area held close to 75 people, had a dozen large HD televisions, and has a great menu. You couldn’t miss any of the action as no matter where you were in the bar you could see one of the screens as you enjoyed the food and the enthusiasm of the rest of the fans that came in for the event.
This card showcased a lot of the Canadian talent that UFC has to offer and that kept the crowd here on the edges of their seats. The ups and downs were reflected in the moods of the fans as we saw Mark Bocek win the decision over John Alessio. Then to see always a favorite, Mark Hominick to lose by a split decision in an amazing back and forth fight to Eddie Yagin. The bar felt the loss but was ready to see what happened to the young Mark MacDonald against the returning Miguel Torres. MacDonald did not disappoint with his explosive knockout in the first bringing us all back to life with excitement. Next came Brendan Schaub vs Ben Rothwell, you could hear as the group commented on how well Rothwell looked coming into this fight, way better than anyone has ever seen him, but I don’t think anyone saw how quickly this match would end. Rothwell claiming the victory via TKO in the first. Everyone was ready for the co-main fight to start.
During the fights we were also lucky enough to participate in Bang’s wife, Jessica’s birthday celebration. A cake and flowers were presented and the whole restaurant and bar area joined in to sing and wish her the best.
As the fight between Che Mills and Rory MacDonald was about to begin the Area 51 team gave the fans one last chance to get in on the raffle action. With the Boston Pizza staff wearing A51 shirts and giving the guys a hand everyone was having a great time. The fight began and everyone’s reaction was the same as mine, “Why is Mills in that cage with Rory?” Rory did what he does best by just dominating Mills to get that second round TKO. The whole restaurant exploded with excitement. Bring on the main event. This is when I was amazed the whole bar went silent, and I mean hear a pin drop silent as the fight began. The whole first round of the Jones/Evans fight had everyone staring at the screens and not saying a thing. It was actually something I have never experienced before with a fight crowd of that size. The fight went on for the full 5 rounds as we watched Jones throw many elbows that would wear Evans down in physical state and mental. When all said and done the decision went to the judges and it wasn’t a hard fight to call, all 3 judges gave the “W” unanimously to the Champ.
With a great night of fights coming to the end the raffle still had to be done, so Bang and the bar staff got on the pa system and drew the names. Everyone wanted to know if they had the lucky ticket that would win one of the many great prizes. I really don’t think there was one person that left that night disappointed in the event. Great reviews were coming from every which way about the night, the food and the great team and product that Area 51 Fight Gear has put together. Looking forward to the next time.
