David Rickels is one of many men lost man at Welterweight in the Bellator plans, Rickels last season lost an extremely competitive match against Karl Amoussou the Welterweight tournament winner. Rickels as well as others lost out on more than a chance at 100,000 and a shot at the Bellator Welterweight belt, he now isn’t even a part of the Welterweight field for season 7. Rickels before losing his Tournament Semifinal fight went 4-0 in Bellator with 4 finishes, including a 22 sec KO of Jordan Smith in the season 6 Quarterfinal fight. Smith after losing is now a part of the season 7 Welterweight Tournament.
In recent history Bellator has recycled Tournament contestants, season 6’s Welterweight fighters included Ben Saunders, Raul Amaya, Jordan Smith, David Rickels, Bryan Baker, Carlos Alexandre Pereira, Karl Amoussou, and Chris Lozano and almost no one returned. With a brand new season on the horizon for Bellator season 7, it will be the swan song for MTV as the changeover to spike is coming. So we can only think that this is Bellator adding more talent to its ranks before the changeover to Spike. There was no comment form Bellator on the specifics to why Smith was giving a chance instead of the rest of the field.
